Chicago and Rock Island Rail Road Co. Certificate 10 Shares. New York, 31. March 1857. #99. In 1854, the Chicago, Rock Island connected Chicago and the East Coast with the Mississippi valley for the first time. This historic event was marked by a large promotional voyage called the Grand Excursion. In 1856, the company built the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi. Its contractor was Henry Farnam (1803-1883) who was first working on the Erie and other Canals. Farnam has signed a President. VF.
