Banca della Svizzera Italiana (now BSI) was established on Piazza della Riforma in Lugano in 1873 in anticipation of the opening of the Gotthard railway line and the development of regional and international trade. Credit Suisse and Basel Bankverein participated in its creation. In 1880, BSI relocated its headquarters to today’s Palazzo dei Marchesi Riva. In 1998, the company became part of the Italian Insurance Group Generali and was sold to BTG Pactual in 2014. EF.
