Aéroplanes Morane-Saulnier. Part de Fondateur, Paris 27. Novembre 1911. #0880. Aéroplanes Morane-Saulnier was established in 1910 by a former employee of Louis Blériot, Raymond Saulnier (1881–1964) and the Morane brothers, Leon (1885–1918) and Robert (1886–1968). Soon after the presentation flights of the Model A of the Wright brothers, Morane-Saulnier presented their Model A, a monoplane design using a wing-warping mechanism for control, in which Jules Védrines won the Paris-Madrid race on May 26, 1911. Morane-Saulnier produced many very successful aeroplanes. During WWI they produced the Type L for the French Armée de l'Air. It has the distinction of being the first fighter aircraft as it was fitted with a machine gun able to fire through the propeller flown by the famous pilot Roland Garros. Morane-Saulnier’s MS 406 was the Armée de l'Air's main fighter plane at the start of WWII. It suffered terribly against the more advanced Messerschmitt Bf 109s in 1940. Switzerland produced 300 units of MS 406 under licence as Morane D 3800. Pilatus Werke in Stans continued to produce the new type Morane D 3801. In 1962 Moraine-Saulnier was purchased by Potez and its civilian airplane production was later purchased by todays Aérospatiale. VF.
