Sanquhar Public Halls Company. 50 Shares £1 each, 5. January 1906. #129/170-219. This Company was established in 1882 to build and run the hall in Sanquhar, Scotland. The certificate is issued to Sir Robert William Buchanan Jardine Baronet of Castlemilk (1868-1927). In 1832, his father, Sir Robert Jardine, 1st Baronet (1825-17) was a founding partner of Jardine, Matheson and Co. in Canton. The company played an important role in the First Opium War and in the occupation of Hong Kong Island by British forces in 1841. In 1844 the firm established its head office in the new British colony of Hong Kong and then proceeded to expand all along the China Coast. By the end of the nineteenth century, the company had become the largest of the foreign trading companies in the Far East. In 1865 Jardine became head of the company. Rare. VF.
