German Athenæum, Limited. One Share £5. London, 7 February 1908. #369. The German Athenaeum was a German Club for cultural exchange in London. The club was established in 1869 by Gottfried Kinkel (1815-1882). In 1849, Kinkel was one of the main actors in the liberal revolution at the Siegburger Zeughaussturm and during the uprising in Baden-Palatine. In 1850, he escaped prison and together with his friend, Carl Schurz, he fled the country for London. His Athenaeum regularly organized presentations, concerts and exhibitions. Its localities were in 93 Mortimer Street and later in 19 Stratford Place. Kinkel left London for Zürich in 1866, where he was offered a chair at the University for History of Art. In Zürich he established the “Züricher Kupferstichkabinett”. Even a street is named after him. Rare. EF.
