Lot: 208
1832, April 12. Entire letter, toasted for disinfection, with involvement of maritime means for carriage, from Khartoum (Sudan) to Leghorn, showing "Lazzaretto" framed postmark of Leghorn on reverse. The letter, with complete contents, was sent by Paul-Émile Botta (born Paolo Emilio), an Italian-French scientist and archeologist in the Middle East, French consul at Mosul in 1841-42, famous discoverer of the palace of Sargon II, King of Assyria (B.C. 721-705) -this discovery gave then a tremendous impulse to the study of the Orient-. Mail originating from this territory in Sudan is remarkably scarce, of even much more importance as having been sent abroad; the transit time for this mail within Egypt is said to be 50 days. Ex Ambassador Biolato.
