Auction: SW1013 - The Collector's Series
Lot: 58
1861, 20c. red, vertical half in a very deep shade, coming from the top of the sheet with large balanced margins, used on part of cover front addressed to Medellín, cancelled ''Nare'' in manuscript, with manuscript ''10 c'' notation alongside denoting the denomination of this bisected stamp, this being an absolutely extraordinary practice that very probably required this endorsement to be stated. Faint horizontal crease passes through the adhesive at base, not detracting. This bisected portion perfectly adjoins one right half which exhibited on one large part of cover front, also addressed to Modesto Molina, at Medellín, with the similar ''10 c'' manuscript indication (it initially belonged to the Charles Jewell collection which sold in 1960). This piece shows a Medellín datestamp of 17 April 1863. Bisects were not officially allowed although tolerated by postal authorities. The 10 centavos corresponded to the single rate of that time. One of the only two examples recorded of a bisected usage in this issue. Highly desirable. Cert. Bortfeldt.
