Lot: 54

1859, 5c. purple-violet, stone A, frame line just touched at right, otherwise huge margins, in combination with 20c. new blue, stone A, two examples in different shades with predominantly large margins, with just one touching at base, all tied by Bogotá oval handstamps on 12 January 1860 entire letter to New York, carried via Colon with large red "Administración de Correos de Colon/Franca" double circle, following involvement of C.J. Fox forwarding agent of Aspinwall (Colon) represented by red cachet on front. The franking paid 25c. for the internal single rate covering a distance above 1,350 Km., plus 20c. for forwarding service to its final destination. Vertical filing fold at left impinging on one 20c. adhesive, not detracting. Early classic period covers addressed to a non-bordering destination are highly desirable and very rare; in this first issue only six covers are recorded, with destinations including New York, Hamburg and France, of which only two exhibit a postmark of the Panamanian mails. In addition, this is the only first-issue cover exhibiting this franking. An important rarity, of great desirability for both collectors of Colombian and Panamanian postal history. Cert. Moorhouse, signed Holcombe. Scott 3, 6. Ex Neuberger and Goeggel.
