Auction: SW1013 - The Collector's Series
Lot: 14
1843, 60r. black, intermediate impression, a large margined pair, applied on reverse of 14 January 1845 cover from Alagoas to Rio Grande do Sul, readdressed to Porto Alegre, with the franking paying the single maritime rate, being cleanly tied by "Correio Geral Das Alagoas" c.d.s. showing, on front, Rio Grande arrival c.d.s. (1st February), following carriage to Porto Alegre after payment of 60r. in cash, as denoted by manuscript endorsement "Tem a pagar o porte - terra 60" (reis), being a charge raised to the addressee for the additional cost of transmission, with Porto Alegre c.d.s. dated 11 February alongside. Right side flap missing, faint acidic ink erosions on the address panel and other minor faults including some later red crayon additions on the face of the cover. Of great importance, demonstrated by the fact of being the only recorded internal cover exhibiting a "mixed franking" of "Bull's Eye" stamps and a cash payment to pay the total postage charges. An extraordinary, fascinating and unique postal-history feature in this, one of the most important issues of worldwide philately; it must be considered as one of the most significant covers of Brazilian philately. A great gem, on this occasion being presented with all its deserved magnitude. Cert. Moorhouse. Scott 2b. Ex Pracchia and Goeggel.
