When Switzerland and Italy agreed on a railway line between Domodossola and Locarno (Centovallina), the Swiss section was built by the Ferrovie Regionali Ticinesi FRT. The line came into operation in 1923. In 1952, the FRT merged with the Valmaggina railway (Ponte Brolla–Bignasco) and in 1961 changed its name to today’s Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi (FART).
