Assouan et Assiout - Travaux d’Irrigation du Gouvernement Égyptien. Mandat de Paiement £500 to John Aird & Cie on 1 July 1914 in London, 13 Janvier 1900. Serie 23, Nr. 83. The world famous old Aswan Dam and the Assiut Barrage across the Nile were constructed by the British civil engineer Sir William Willcocks (1852– 1932) and the leading engineering firm John Aird & Co. Construction started in 1892 and lasted until 1903. The Egyptian Government used these “Mandat de Paiement” for paying John Aird & Co. for its works during construction. A total of £ 4.7 Million, payable in 60 Series of 158 mandates every 6 months from 1 July 1903 until 1 January 1933 in London at the Bank of England. In 1959, Egypt built, with the support from the Soviet-Union, seven kilometres further up the Nil, a new much bigger dam. EF.
