Banco Giro di Venezia. Lot of 2: Cedola 10 and 100 Ducati, Venezia, 1. October 1798. Nr. 11013 und 783. The proud Venetian Republic lost independence when Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Venice in 1797. The Austrians took control of the city from 1798 until 1805. In this period these “Cedolas” were issued by the "Banco Giro di Venezia". The Banco Giro had been a financial institution in Venice since it received its charter by the Senate in 1584. These Cedolas were used as paper money but were bearing interest. Denominations where 10, 50 and 100 Ducati, printed on watermarked paper with the Habsburg double-headed crowned eagle above and the winged lion of San Marco below. Handwritten signatures of Giovanelli, Fovel and Schiantarelli. EF.
