Società Italiana Automobili Darracq. Azione 5 da 25 L., Napoli, 15 Lugli 1906. Nr. 60896-60900. In 1891 Alexandre Darracq (1855-1931) began the production of bicycles followed by cars under the brand Gladiator. In 1896, he sold this business and founded "Automobiles Darracq SA" located in Suresnes near Paris. By 1905 it established branches and partnerships in the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy and expanded into both cars and aviation engines. In terms of the Italian market, Darracq established the Società Italiana Automobili Darracq (SIAD) through a license arrangement with Ugo Stella, an aristocrat from Milano. There was an assembly plant in Naples, which was moved to Portobello (near Milano). Business did not develop very well. Darracq decided to sell it in 1910. The name of the Company was changed to Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (ALFA). In 1915 the largest shareholder, the Banca di Sconto, placed Nicola Romeo as the new boss of the plant. His name became later part of the Company's name: ALFA-Romeo. Beautiful Illustration: A Darracq Gladiator in front of the Vesuvius approaching the Company building. Small folding marks in the center.
