Soccorsa a Sollievo dei Romani/Support the relief of the Romans. Lire 100, Serie 3, Roma "Il Centro d'insurrezione" 30 April 1867. Signature of Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882). Nr. 1806. Small format. A receipt for a contribution of 100 lira to a fund raised by Garibaldi for the relief of the people of Rome. Signed by Garibaldi on the left side. In September 1867, Garibaldi announced his intention to March on Rome and making it the capital of Italy. On the reverse: A print of Garibaldi''s proclamation issued it the “Concittadini e Fratelli Italiani” with main statement “Il prinicpio che Roma appartine ai Romani”. However, the march was opposed by the French emperor Napoleon III, who sent troops to defend the city. It remained under papal control for another four years. Scenic vignette of the lady Italia, with the wolf suckling Romulus and Remus. Giuseppe Garibaldi is considered to be one of the "fathers of the fatherland", having personally led several military campaigns that led to the formation of a unified Italy. EF.
