Corrado Frera (1859-1941) was born in Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate. 21 years old, he went to Milano where he was first selling toys and gifts and then soon traded in rubber accessories for cycles. 1897 he started very successfully selling the NSU motorcycle from the Swiss bike producer Zürcher and Lüthi (later called Zedel). In 1905 SA Frera was founded. In 1906 Frera began producing his own motorcycles under the brand SAF and Frera-Zedel using the Zedel engins. The Company soon was one of the leading Italian motorcycle brands. One of the major customers was the Italian army. SAF employed 300 workers in the office in Milano, had a factory in Tradate and branches in Turin, Padua, Parma, Florence, Bologna, Mantua, Rome and Como. In 1915 SAF produced 3'000 bikes. After the war SAF had 600 employees and produced 6'000 bikes per year. In 1936 SAF stopped production. EF.
