1847, Oct 5. Entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to Lisbon conveyed by the RMSP "Swift", rated 4s 2d but unpaid on departure. As a letter originating from an overseas country and addressed via British ports to a foreign destination, the postage should have been paid in advance, consequently bearing framed "Returned for/4s2d Postage" denoting non payment and returned for collection of postage with framed "N°__/Detained for Postage", awaiting  settlement. The "Paid" cds confirms the postage to have been collected, charged "350" on delivery. Very scarce. Starting Price US$ 200
