A Fine Highland Single Malt Characterised by a Floral Bouquet
Cask description
The Wood
Since Tullibardine was mothballed in the 1990s and reopened by Tullibardine Distillery Ltd in 2003, they have paid very close attention to the quality of casks, and the wood, used in the maturation of their spirit. With a refocus on the whisky as a single malt, a rigorous wood policy was introduced - seeing a huge influx of fresh casks - and the nature of the malt off their stills also witnessed some changes.
The Spirit
Tullibardine's repositioning as a single malt of note inspired a new wood policy, but also a revitalisation of their entire spirit run. Cutting back on some of the nuttiness for which Tullibardine was previously associated, some tweaks in the distillation process and the cut of the spirit favoured a spirit with highly-polished floral notes at the fore. These changes established Tullibardine as a Highland single malt worthy of recognition.
The Masters
Owners Terroir Distillers boast a long history in the wine and spirits industry, with the third generation of the Picard Family at the helm. In 1951, Picard Vins & Spiriteux was founded by the family as a wine producer, later diversifying into the worlds of whisky, pastis, bitters, rhum agricole and eau de vie through privately-held subsidiary Terroir Distillers. In addition to its interests in Scotland, the company operates two distilleries and four bottling sites in France.
The History
This cask will have been filled within a couple of years of the Picard Vins & Spiritueux acquisition of the distillery, a move which was lauded as an indication of the growing international appeal of Scotch whisky. The leading French wine & spirits group had been purchasing Tullibardine spirit for three years prior to the deal. Having added a bottling plant to their Highland site, Tullibardine is now one of the very few distilleries in Scotland to distill, mature and bottle all on one site.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Lemon drizzle cake and dry apple cider, developing into resinous and perfumed notes. Hot madeleines and unroasted nuts give way to lashings of custard.
Palate: Crisp and tart with a heavy citrus edge. Warming spice balances with sweet breadiness and vanilla pods on the mid-palate.
Finish: Subtle but sustained cracked black pepper. Fragrant resins return, the dry notes contrasted with lingering liquorice and pear drops. Medium length and pleasingly complex.
