Auction: CSS96B - CHINESE BANKNOTES AND COINS FEATURING THE MR. LAI PO HUNG COLLECTION OF CHINESE BANKNOTES &
Lot: 1558

China, Tibet, [PCGS AU55] silver Vartula Tangka, ND (1763-1764), the syllable 'dza' in Vartula script (equivalent to the syllable 'ja' in Sanskirt, maybe short for 'jaya', meaning 'victorious') repeated eight times on both sides, with eight-spoked wheel in centre. Variety with single central circle on both sides, (C-5.2), PCGS AU55, cert. #47306729, one of 8 in the PCGS population report, with none finer and only one with the same grade! The same type graded AU53 hammered for 38,000 HKD at Spink in October 2022. An early and scarce issue that will certainly be among the crown jewels for any advanced collectors of Tibetan coinage!
