Map
1735 "Province de Quang-Tong". Printed in Paris. Unmounted. Cartographer: du HALDE, Jean Baptiste. Coloured, copperplate engraving. Image size: 21" x 16.5". A bit grubby; Certificate of Authenticity issued by James Douthwaite.
This map is perhaps one of the finest and attractively designed to appear in du Halde's Description of China [Paris 1735]. A second engraving of it was subsequently incorporated into D'anville's own Atlas of China published in the Hague in 1737. The map shows Southern coasts of China with Hainan and the Pearl River delta.
A fine cartouche lower right depicting a typical scene from the 18th Century China trade-richly dressed European merchants negotiating and bartering with Cantonese tradesmen over local goods and wares.
