Malaya, Board of Commissioners of Currency, $1, 1940, serial number A/8 056722, (Pick 4b), Legacy Currency Grading 20 Very Fine (Small Edge Tears and Minor Damage), rare type. The Malaya 1940 series were created after the decision to create one single pan-Malayan Currency for the region which included Straits Settlements, Federated Malay States, Unfederated Malay States and Brunei. During the transport of the newly printed $1 and $5, the ship carrying these notes from London were reportedly sunken, and the notes were then lost. The notes that did arrive safely were stored in vaults in Singapore and Penang, and were not circulated. In 1941 when Penang was evacuated, the notes fell into the hands of the Japanese. The remaining notes in Singapore were either destroyed or shipped to India. These notes were often reported to have been found washed ashore or miraculously flowing in the sea to be found by fisherman. Due to various safety reasons, eventually in 1946, all notes were destroyed. Even with these treacherous circumstances, examples have amazingly appeared in the market.
