Lot: 1139

China: Southern Ming, Yong Li Tong Bao, 38x 1 cash coins, many different mintmarks on reverse e.g. 'Hu', 'Gong', 'Ming', 'Guo', 'Ding', 'Yue' etc, 5 coins graded by Zhong Qian as per images, the rest fine to extremely fine. Zhu You Lang (1623-1662), Prince of Gui (modern day Hengyang, Hubei Province) self proclaimed as Regent of Ming after the death of the Emperor Long Wu. However, Zhu Yu Yue, the younger brother of the Long Wu proclaimed himself as Emperor Shao Wu in Guangzhou. Shortly after this, the Prince of Gui also proclaimed himself to be Emperor Yong Li. The two sides went to war over who was the true heir to the Ming Empire and was won by Shao Wu. Unfortuantely Guangzhou fell to the Qing army not long after this and the Shao Wu Emperor was killed, leaving Yong Li as the sole Emperor of what is now called Southern Ming. Yong Li and other Ming loyalists held out in Southern China until 1660 when the Qing Army attacked Yunnan Province. The emperor escaped to Burma only to be captured and returned to Wu San Gui by a local chieftain. He was personally executed by Wu, who strangled him and his household with a bow string; the fourth and last of the Southern Ming Emperors. A nice lot with many varities. Dr. Werner Burger Collection. (38). [259-264, 266-274]
