Ilkhanate, AV dinar, circa 1291-1295, gold, weighs 4g, While its core territory lies far out in modern day Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan, Ilkhanate was part of the four main khaganates of the Mongol Empire, and was the first khaganate to recognise Yuan Dynasty's Kublai's 'khanship'. This coin was minted during the short reign of Gaykhatu (1291-1295 A.D.), while the khaganate itself lasted for only 79 years, but the close relationship with Yuan Dynasty China manifested in the form of the Ilkhanids using the dragon clothing of Imperial China and paper money with Chinese characters. More importantly, the communications between Ilkhanate and Yuan Dynasty encouraged the establishment of the unified Mongol Empire, significantly easing trade and commerce across Asia and into Europe, which very likely made the famous travels of Marco Polo more feasible, whom stayed with Gaykhatu for nine months. Good Very Fine. Culturally significant. Dr. Werner Burger Collection.
