Qing Dynasty, Mandarin square of a senior military official from the Chinese Imperial Court (Guanbu), Mandarin sqaures are large embroidered rank indicating badges sewn onto offical robes or surcoats. Sourced from a British collector, the current piece has a lion central motif, indicating that it's worn by a very high ranking military official (Chief Military Officer, Commander of the Guards, or Second in Command). The embroidery itself is in stunning detail, featuring rich bold colours and intricate details of the clouds and the lion to create an imposing sense of authority and luxury. Approximately 30x30cm. Exquisite.
