Auction: CSS78D - The Numismatic Collectors' Series sale - Hong Kong and World Banknotes and Coins
Lot: 5820

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, $50, uniface obverse proof in black on thick (glossy finish) plain paper dated '...... 18....', handwritten date 1893, In this year new border security devices were introduced to counter forgery, and at least two proofs were pulled to show these changes.

The central panel reading 'Promises to pay the Bearer on demand at its Office here Fifty Dollars or the equivalent in the Currency of the Island, value received.'

From the archives of the printer, Ashby & Co./Barclay & Fry, London (circa.1974).

After the $25, the $50 is the rarest denomination on this bank, as it also was not particularly popular.

In fact in this century no notes of this denomination were printed by Bank between 1934 and 1968.

With signature spaces for 'Chief Acc't' (Accountant) and Chief Manager.

(Pick 145pr), PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (Printer's Annotations, Ink Smudges). Of the highest rarity and desirability. Only one issued (and cancelled) $50 note dated before 1900 exists on this bank in any private collection, and it is believed that no other $50 of this period in any form exists in any private holding outside of the present one.

Promises to pay the Bearer on demand at its Office here Fifty Dollars or the equivalent in the Currency of the Island, value received”字樣,來自1974年倫敦 Ashby & Co./Barclay & Fry印刷廠之舊檔。
