1849 (29 Oct.) entire wine trader's letter to London "via Marseilles", rated "2/7" and bearing a light strike of the two-line "ship letter/victoria hong kong" in black with Hong Kong type 9 c.d.s. on the flap. This letter missed the P&O sailing and was sent by private ship to Bombay, then East India Company ship, finally the P&O Levant Line. The original ship expected to carry this ('Mermaid') has been obscured by ink.

Lee Scamp only recorded three covers travelling this route (illustrated p.156), the Ship Letter handstamp indicates that this letter was carried by private ship. Pays 2/3d. packet rate via Marseilles and 4d. ship letter. Photo
