1844 (24 Mar.) entire from Calcutta "pr 'Mermaid'" to Capt. Champsonier of the 56th Regiment from Calcutta, to "China", rated "1/2" with boxed Calcutta Ship Letter (27.4) and a superb strike of Hong Kong type 7 c.d.s. (15.7) c.d.s. Held for payment and eventually returned to London bearing boxed "l.c.o./postage not paid/to London" and framed "returned from", both in red with revised postage rate "2/5" and London c.d.s. (23.11). Light vertical crease. An important cover with a lot of character. Believed to be the earliest return to sender cover from Hong Kong after it became a British colony and early use of the type 7 datestamp. Photo
