The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, $500, 1.3.1912, serial number R/E 104399, purple and black on orange, bank arms upper centre, vignette of a sampan and junk boat sailing by a pagoda at centre, handsigned at lower left and right, reverse blue and black, Bank building at centre,
(Pick 46a), PMG 15 Choice Fine (Tape Repairs, Annotations). In the cataloguer's opinion this note is the earliest fully issued $500 for Hong Kong. Although earlier $500 notes do exist they are either specimens or cancelled and as such the historical signifance of 'the earliest known fully issued $500' cannot be overestimated. Only 3-4 issued notes of this type exist and the last time any appeared in auction was Spink China's sale in January 2014.
