Auction: CSS70 - The Numismatic Collectors' Series sale
Lot: 6523
Malaysia: Bank Negara, 2 ringgit, specimen, ND (1996-99), vertical signature of Ahmad Bin Mohd Don, predominantly purple, a POLYMER note, the watermark shows 'NOTE PRINTING AUSTRALIA', 'CONTOH' overprinted in red both sides,
(Pick not listed, KNB46 for similar), PMG 65EPQ Gem Uncirculated. An extremely rare and unusual note in many ways. Firstly, Malaysia began to issue polymer notes in 2012 for the RM1 and RM5. This note predates them by over 15 years. Secondly, the printer is 'NOTES PRINTING AUSTRALIA' and not NBM. Presumably Bank Negara was experimenting with polymer notes and asked Australia for examples as it was the first country to issue polymer notes in 1988. Thirdly, now that the RM2 denomination is discontinued, this is the only way to obtain a polymer RM2! An extremely attractive note for many reasons and sure to see spirited bidding!
