Auction: CSS61 - South East Asian Banknotes and Coins
Lot: 6117
"Banjarmasin", "Borneo", Local presentation double "Rider" in gold. The Barrett collection contains three examples of two die combinations. Two appeared in his book, "Brunei & Nusantara" (1988), while a third is "in reserve"!
Rather than repeat the information published then -- and essentially there is no new information that has come to the attention of the collector -- the original page is illustrated here. For those of you unfamiliar with the book, the dust jacket is also illustrated.
One example appeared in the collection of noted English collector of the mid-twentieth century, Lady Deveen, and was illustrated in her auction held at Glendining in 1964.
When exactly these pieces were made and by who is still not known. The example offered here is 15.2 centimeters in diameter and weighs 74.7 grams. It is struck in .750 gold, and would be rated at Extremely Fine in condition.
With the Dutch equivalent selling in the range of USD250,000 (see the recent Heritage sale), this piece is a show-stopper at a fraction of the price.
