U.S.A.: 1857 (10 June) blue wrapper to Augustine Heard "per 'Arabia' Via Marseilles & Overland Mail - paid" with New York despatch c.d.s., "142" and "162" rate marks and London Paid transit (22.6) and, on the reverse, Hong Kong arrival (6.8) across the join, plus Chinese delivery characters in black ink; carried en route on the 'Valetta', 'Ava' and 'Cadiz' and arrived in Hong Kong just before the blockade of Canton. The British blockade of Canton began the day after this letter arrived in Hong Kong, possibly carried on the last private streamer before the blockade or on a British gunboat to be delivered in Whampoa since the foreign merchants had moved there when Canton was closed
