10c. on 12ca. deep orange, possibly [25] and cancelled by a central strike of Customs Ningpo c.d.s. dated 1897 (23 Mar.); well centred and good perforations. An interesting and appealing example of this popular stamp. Photo

This is an intriguing stamp. The date of 23rd March is some weeks earlier that the previously recorded earliest date, The centring of both the stamp and the surcharge suggests that it originated from the earliest used Ningpo sheet.
We currently have records of 55 used 'Golden Dragons' from eight sheets which were used in either Ningpo or Swatow
