1884 (5 May) opened-out cover to Italy bearing, on the reverse, thick paper 1ca. and 3ca. (the 5ca. is a recent addition). The 1ca. and 3ca. are not tied and are cancelled by a part strike of Tientsin seal. Sent from G.O.F. Dodatz, Tientsin (handstamp on the address side) with Customs Tientsin, Customs Shanghai (9.5) and Genoa arrival (22.7) on the reverse. Sent via the French Post office with 25c. tied by "shang-hai/chine" c.d.s. with packet boat c.d.s. (15.5) alongside.


This cover is listed by James Whang (251), since then the 5ca. has been added and the two seal postmarks painted to improve them. James Whang was uncertain whether the 1ca. and 3ca. were originally on this cover and that a 5ca. had been removed. Large Dragon covers to Italy are scarce. This reference cover is offered for sale on its merits. Photo
