Lot: 1157

The Chartered bank of India, Australia and China, $10, uniface obverse and reverse archival photograph of an unadopted design, handwritten date '25.7.29', profile of Mercury at upper left, allegorical maiden at right, manuscript signature of Ferguson, the reverse shows Mercury at upper right, Bank building at centre.

PMG 63NET Choice Uncirculated (Card Stock Corner Damage). 1929 was the last date in which the large sized $10's were issued. The Bank was looking to change to banknote design and size and commissioned different printers' to do this. This design was produced by Bradbury and Wilkinson which is very important as Waterlow and Sons had been printing for the Bank from 1912 and continued to do so until at least 1956. This is the only evidence to date of Bradbury doing any work for the Chartered Bank before 1959. Markedly different to Roman Soldier series which was issued in 1931. Unique and important
