Auction: CSS57B - Banknotes, Bonds & Shares and Coins of China and Hong Kong
Lot: 1138
The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, $5, 18.8.1930, without serial numbers, blue, black and red, supported arms at upper centre, male Roman soldier at left, small size red '5' at lower centre, watermark area at right, printed manuscript of Fergusson at lower right, reverse in similar colours, junk boat and sampan right of centre, 4 punch holes with 'SPECIMEN WATERLOW & SONS LTD' printed in red. Colour trial specimens from this era are generally found in travelling salesmen books which were given to the printer's employees to show their work to prospective clients. These were often money issuing authorities. The notes were printed in different colours to the issued notes and have no watermark to prevent confusion with official true colour specimens which were given to banks to differentiate between genuine and counterfeit notes. For this reason colour trial specimens are often much rarer than true colour specimens with few exceptions. For this type, both types are more or less equally rare and highly desirable,
(Pick 53cts), PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (Previously Mounted) and very rare. This is the first time that a fully printed note on both sides is encountered by the cataloguer
