Auction: CSS36 - Banknotes, Bonds & Shares and Coins of China and Hong Kong
Lot: 1513
China, Sinkiang Province / Chinese Turkestan, rebel Ya'qub Beg (1865-77), private issue Tangas (2), 1.39, 1.34g, ½-Tanka, 0.90g, Kashgar, the ½-Tanka, AH - /1291 (written 1219) others without clear dates, crude rendering of 'Abd al-'Aziz Khan, rev. zarb-i Kashghar-i Latif (cf. Nastich & Schuster E09, 10; Album P3090; KM. C37.1), about very fine, the ½-Tanka particularly rare, see note Nastich & Schuster, p.246 (3)
Nastich & Schuster, p.235, note that many unofficial coins (termed 'private coins' by Chinese dealers) were struck at this time by local jewellers to remedy a shortage of officially-struck Tangas. Although often weighing less than the legitimate issues, they were made of good silver, and were apparently accepted as coins as in some coin hoards they comprise up to 25% of the total.
