Auction: CSS32 - The Numismatic Collectors' Series incl. The Nicholas Rhodes Collection of Tibetan Coins, Tibetan and Nepalese Banknotes
Lot: 161
Tibet, 50 Tam, dated T.E. 1677 (= AD 1931), Proof print of obverse, bearing the serial number 19576 in the upper right panel, uniface.
In the year 1931/32 Tibetan banknotes started to be produced in the Mint Tabshi Lekhung. At this time not only new types of black seals were used for the 50 tam notes, but it was also decided to enlarge the panels reserved for the serial numbers in order to be able to accommodate numbers with more digits. This proof print is particularly interesting, since it features two vertical strokes on either side of the upper serial number panel which indicate how the panels should be extended. Notes with extended panels were introduced in the following year T.E. 1678. However, the panels on these notes were only extended on the right end (upper panel) and on the left end (lower panel). Cf. Bertsch, 2012, p. 64.
