China, issued for Tibet (undated), Quarter-Sichuan Rupee, 2.86g (YZM 441-442; KM Y #1 var), PCGS AU55 and rare
Reverse variety with small leaf to the left of the character “zao” (9 ‘o clock position. According to Wang Chengzhi (“Sichuan zang yang”, "Tibetan Silver coins of Sichuan”, China Numismatics, 1983.3, p. 12-18 and plate 54) a total of only 110,000 pieces of the quarter Rupee coins were struck by the Chengdu mint in 1904, 1905 and 1912. The fact that most of them were converted to buttons and jewellery items explains the rarity of these coins nowadays.
