1858 (14 July) a folded letter from Shanghai to England sent via Marselles paid 1/- rate for a ½ oz. letter. Good strike of Hong Kong double-lined PAID (Proud PD1) applied in Hong Kong for pre-paid mail from the Treaty Ports with Hong Kong medium broken-ring cds backstamp (Webb type 9). London Paid arrival SP 15 58 and North Shields receiver cds SP 16 58.
The writer William Capron, commander of the 19th Century merchant barque "Carausius" which was constructed by William Harkess at Suderland in 1856. The ship was built for Edward Oliver of North Shields. It was wrecked in the Atlantic in 1870. Capron complained to Oliver that he was unfairly dismissed as commander thus leaving China back to England as early as possible.
