1897 (20 Sept.) very large Maus envelope double registered to Germany bearing Hong Kong Postal Fiscal 1891 $5 on $10 purple on red cancelled by a fine strike of Canton code "*" c.d.s. with a second strike alongside, a superb strike of the boxed "AR" struck in red (the earliest date recorded by Proud) and large "R" in circle; with Hong Kong (21.9) and Lichtenthal (23.10) c.d.s. There is a heavy vertical crease at right where the envelope was originally folded over for posting. Some expected ageing but a very rare use of the surcharge stamp. Photo
