Canada: 1857 (21 Feb.) stampless envelope to Shanghai "Per Cunard Steamer to Liverpool" with red Toronto paid despatch c.d.s. and unframed "PAID" with manuscript "1/2" in mauve ink and "1/5" in pencil and London Paid (9.3) c.d.s., the reverse bearing Hong Kong transit (29.4); some light edge wear. Thought to be the only stampless envelope from Canada to China. Photo

This letter was carried from Toronto to England by Cunard via Boston and closed mail prepaid 1/2d. From England this letter missed the sailing of the 'Indus' from Southampton and was sent overland to Marseilles, then P.& O. steamers 'Valetta to Alexandra, overland to Suez, 'Hindostan' to Galle, Ceylon and 'Pekin' to Hong Kong, 'Formosa' to Shanghai. Rated from England to Shanghai 1/- plus 5d. French transit
