1888 (21 Jan.) Japan 2s. postal stationery card to C.S. Hartwell in Zumbrota, Minnesota, U.S.A. bearing Customs Tientsin type A c.d.s. with Customs Shanghai (5.2), the card is cancelled by a propeller obliterator and with a neat strike of "shanghai/i.j.p.a." type III c.d.s. (a very early date for this, possibly the earliest); there is a thin patch where a stamp has been taken off in transit, this space covered by Yokohama transit (22.2) and with San Francisco transit (10.3) in red at left. An interesting card, the missing stamp was probably a Japanese adhesive to make up the international rate. Photo
