Auction: CSS118B - China Banknotes and Coins
Lot: 1568
People's Republic of China, [NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo] brass proof 100 yuan, 1982, 'Panda' on obverse, 'Temple of Heaven' on reverse, 32mm in diameter, weighs 12g. A representation of the mid to late planning stage of what was to become one of the most iconic and popular Chinese coins. The main difference being the '100 yuan' denomination being present, otherwise more or less identical to the issued version. While the Panda coin is part of China's pursuit of 'soft power' via Panda Diplomacy, having the 'Temple of Heaven' on the reverse of the design was also seen as an integral part of its success as its symmetry presented a less severe motif compared to the National Emblem, the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square. Cert. #8240274-002, NGC Top Pop, with only 4 other examples on record as of cataloguing. A highly important piece for any modern Chinese coin collector
