China, Qing Dynasty, [GBCA 82] coin-shaped brass membership token with square central hole, Chinese characters 'Jin Qian Yi Ji' on obverse, 1858-1863, two linked squares at left and right on reverse, 38.2x2.5mm, weighs 17.1g. This membership token was exclusive to Jin Qian Hui (Golden Coin Society) members, which was one of the main supporting forces of the Taiping Rebellion during the Xian Feng era. The Chinese characters were specifically minted with hidden codes as a more sophisticated means of membership identification, and referencing that the society was founded by 8 members. Rare and fascinating
