Auction: CSS118A - Hong Kong, Macau, World Banknotes and Coins
Lot: 199

Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, colour trial $5, 1.1.1909, zero serial number, orange (issued note in green/blue), men carrying water at left, arms at centre, boat at right, reverse in orange and blue,
(Pick 161cts), PMG 58, previously mounted. Noted mounting though very minor but unavoidable as colour trials were often mounted on booklets for salesman to carry with them when offering Waterlow's services. Issued notes are possibly seen more often but colour trials only once in a blue moon even with two types (the other type in purple). The last time an orange example appeared on the market was back in March 2019 in Spink. Vibrant colour remains with clear overprint stamps, a rarely seen type that is surely pleasing to the eye of all Hong Kong collectors.
