Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China, Hong Kong, $500, 1.1.1949, serial number Z/N 052095, two handsigned signatures,
(Pick 59e), PMG 30, ink. Of this $500 series, handsigned examples from 1934-52 are seen periodically in the market, generally of 1934, and the later 1950s examples. All are still considered as scarce due to their high denomination and early issue dates. But this 1949 issue is likely one of the scarcest after the 1936 example where at the moment only a single example is known. Over the years, a handful of 1949 issues are known to be in collectors' hands, with this a recently discovered piece. With only a few smaller stamps and minor ink annotations, completely original paper, there are not much to complain about. TOP POP for the 1949 year, and only bested by 8 examples across all pre 1950s handsigned types, with all being from 1934. Likely missing in most advanced collector's collections. Highly important and not to be missed.
