Auction: CSS112A - CHINESE BANKNOTES AND COINS
Lot: 153
China, Five Dynasties & Ten Kingdoms Period, [Zhong Qian 82] iron 10 cash, 'Qian Feng Quan Bao', 907-951, from the Kingdom of Southern Chu, type with 'Tian' in Clerical Script at upper quadrant on reverse, 41.9x4.9mm, weighs 35.7g. The region of Southern Chu has little copper deposits, hence the use of iron for its currency. The heavy weight of iron cash plus the ban of the currency's usage in other kingdoms meant that merchants were forced to trade cash for goods instead, which lead to a prosperous economy in the region.
