1864 (1 July) opened-out printed envelope to New York Via Marseilles with manuscript endorsement in the upper corner "Hankow July 1/64 recd. Oct 3/64" with "2/1½" rate in red crayon, and bearing a fine strike of "shanghai/paid" code "C" (21.7) c.d.s. (Proud PD7), London Paid (15.9) plus U.S. "paid" and 21/cents accountancy handstamp all in red, the reverse with overlapping Shanghai and Hong Kong (26.7) c.d.s. both in blue. A rare and important early cover from Hankow; very few items of mail are recorded from this period prior to the British Post Office being set up in 1872
