1859 (11 Apr.) Gibbon envelope with enclosure to Aberdeen with printed "via marseilles" and typical last-minute note on the address side, a fine strike of handstruck "paid" in red (Proud PD1) and manuscript "9" rate mark in red crayon. The reverse with Hong Kong (13.4) and Aberdeen (29.5) c.d.s.

The letter includes "...General Straubenzee has taken leave of us at Canton & gone to Hong Kong ... he will remain at Hong Kong until his successor arrives. The new Plenipotentiary ... has not arrived, and until he comes nothing can be decided about any of the troops leaving China." A good letter from the Second Opium War
