Local Penny Rate: 1847 (14 Feb.) small envelope with original contents from Whampoa to H.M.S. 'Vestal' at Hong Kong, with "1" rate mark, the reverse with type 9 c.d.s. and Chinese delivery characters shui sun goon (book letter shop) and "Tremlett Childers". Fine and a rare example of the local 1d. rate.

This lot is accompanied by a long article by James Grimwood-Taylor which includes a partial transcription of the letter. He postulates that this letter was carried privately to Hong Kong and given to the Hong Kong Post Office for local delivery. Presumably they had better access to the many ships in the harbour
