China
1894 Dowager Empress
Covers
1896 (19 June) diminutive envelope to Holland bearing, on the reverse, 3ca. orange-yellow tied by Peking seal in blue and part "i.g. of customs/peking" c.d.s. with Shanghai transit (25.6) and the arrival c.d.s.; the address side with France "Chine" 5c. tied by "shang-hai/chine" c.d.s. (26.6); horizontal crease through the French stamp as it was affixed over the edge of the envelope. A scarce cover paying the international printed paper rate. Photo

Because this envelope is open at both sides, there was conjecture that it was used as a newspaper wrapper, however, this is a non-seal envelope so would not have been of any use as a wrapper. This envelope probably contained a small printed greetings or business card. One of the smallest letters of Imperial China
